On the strength of a terrific three-car pass on Lap 61, Scott Pruett maneuvered himself from sixth to third in one corner on the way to a third-place finish in Saturday’s Miami Grand Prix at the Homestead-Miami Speedway as the highest-finishing Lexus.
Pruett, who co-drove the #01 Telmex Lexus-Riley with Memo Rojas, would eventually move up to second. He then made a move for the lead and momentarily had the position before getting balked with traffic in a move that dropped him to an eventual third-place finish.
Also joining the Chip Ganassi Racing duo in the top-10 was the AIM Autosport pairing of Mark Wilkins and Burt Frisselle. Their #61 Exchange Traded Gold Lexus-Riley ran as high as second during the race, but slipped back in the field after a string of full-course cautions put a crimp in the team’s one-pit stop strategy.
Rounding out the Lexus contingent were Ian James/Henri Zogaib in 13th, Mark Patterson/Oswaldo Negri in 15th and Randy Ruhlman/Shane Lewis in 16th.
The Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series continues at the Virginia International Raceway on April 29 with SPEED providing live coverage beginning at 1 p.m. EDT.
NOTES:
- With his third-place finish today, Scott Pruett earned his 32nd top-five finish and his 40th top-10 finish in 43 career Daytona Prototype starts. It also marks his third top-five in three races this season after winning the Rolex 24 and finishing fourth at Mexico City. In addition, the third-place finish gave teammate Memo Rojas his first Daytona Prototype podium position.
- Scott Pruett continues to lead the Daytona Prototype point standings and will take a one-point lead into the next race at Virginia International Raceway.
- AIM Autosport’s 10th-place marked the team’s third consecutive top-10 showing in the team’s first full season of Rolex Series competition.
- Ian James led 18 laps for Michael Shank Racing before dropping back to 12th after a pair of late-race pit stops. It marked the second time this season that the #6 Michael Shank Racing Lexus had led a race.

Quotes:
Scott Pruett, #01 Telmex Lexus-Riley: “I had a run on Ian (James) on the back-straight, and was able to get inside of him and had the lead for a second or two, but just ran out of room and I didn’t want to get into him. I had to get out of it a little bit and that allowed Max (Angelelli) to get by and he brought the 05 car with him. It was a scrap out there all race long. That’s what Grand-Am racing is all about. We had a strong effort from everyone – Memo (Rojas) did a great job, Lexus did a great job and really the whole Ganassi team was terrific.”
Memo Rojas, #01 Telmex Lexus-Riley: “I’m happy with my first podium. The racing was really tough. It seemed like we were always in a battle trying to get to the front. In the end, I think any of the cars that were running upfront had a chance depending on traffic. It was really good racing.”
Burt Frisselle, #61 Exchange Traded Gold Lexus-Riley: "Third race, third top-10, that's really exciting. Our car wasn't ideal. I made a couple of errors and had a little issue with my shifting. But it's always nice to bring the car home in the top 10 and be competitive for a top-five. It was a big battle all day, a lot of good drivers, no cars really went down a lap, so at the end you saw what DP racing is all about."
Mark Wilkins, #61 Exchange Traded Gold Lexus-Riley: "These races are a blast! I really enjoy driving these Daytona Prototypes. The guys gave me a great car, Lexus gave me a great engine, the Dynamic shocks worked really well here. It was some of the best racing I've done in a while, running with those guys right up at the front. They're aggressive. I had to be as aggressive as possible. We struggled with power-down a little bit, so I would compensate by driving really hard on the brakes and I flat-spotted the front tires. Overall, it was a great race. Another top-10 is fantastic for us."
Mark Patterson, #60 NetApp/ESP Lexus-Riley: “It was a great race, but it just didn’t end up the way we hoped it would. My first stint was fabulous. We avoided a problem right at the start and were in the top ten by the time I came into the pits, but things didn’t go as well for us from there. But some other cars had some problems as well, so hopefully it wont hurt us too much in the championship and in the Trueman Award standings.”
Oswaldo Negri, #60 NetApp/ESP Lexus-Riley: “Things were going pretty well and we were in the top ten with a lot of racing to do yet, but, unfortunately, I hit on some oil or something I didn’t see and went right off in turn one. I hate it for the team and all the friends and family who were out here to see us race, but it was just some bad luck for us today.”
Henri Zogaib, #6 Michael Shank Racing Lexus-Riley: “I have to admit it was a thrill to see Ian leading the race ahead of my good friend JC France’s car out there. I felt really good about how I started the race, and the strategy we had for the first segment worked to perfection. The car was fantastic and I felt very comfortable on this track. I am looking forward to getting more time in the car soon.”
Ian James, #6 Michael Shank Racing Lexus-Riley: “It was good to lead a Rolex race for the second time this season. Unfortunately, our pit strategy didn’t work as well as we hoped with the way the yellows played out. But Henri did a great job at the start, and the car was really good during my stint so we know we have some good results in our future.

ROJAS LEADS LEXUS IN HOMESTEAD QUALIFYING; WILKINS SETS NEW QUALIFYING BEST FOR AIM
Chip Ganassi Racing’s Memo Rojas qualified the #01 Telmex Lexus-Riley seventh to place as the highest-qualifying Lexus for Saturday’s Grand Prix of Miami at the Homestead-Miami Speedway. Rojas will co-drive with series points leader Scott Pruett in Saturday’s race.
In addition to the Ganassi effort, Mark Wilkins made it two Lexus-powered cars in the top-10 with a ninth-place showing in the #61 Exchange Traded Gold Lexus-Riley. The result is the best-ever Daytona Prototype qualifying effort for the fledgling AIM Autosport team. Making just its fourth Grand-Am start, the team has placed in the top-seven in each of its first two races and currently ranks in fifth place. Wilkins will co-drive with Burt Frisselle, who earned a third-place at Homestead in 2004 with Lexus power.
Rounding out the Lexus-powered contingent was Mark Patterson (co-driving the #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley with Oswaldo Negri) in 13th, Randy Ruhlman (co-driving the #3 Preformed Line Products Lexus-Riley with Shane Lewis) in 18th and Henri Zogaib (co-driving the #6 Michael Shank Racing Lexus-Riley with Ian James) in 19th.
Saturday’s Grand Prix of Miami will be televised live by SPEED beginning at 2 p.m. EDT.
Quotes:
Mark Wilkins, #61 Exchange Traded Gold Lexus (after losing his power steering in qualifying): “I've never driven the car without power steering – it's a workout and a half. But we have a great car – ninth is a testament to how good our car really is. In two laps, to be there is pretty remarkable. We definitely had a top-five car without that little glitch, but it's better to happen in qualifying than in the race because it would have been really hard to drive the car without power steering for an hour and 15 minutes.
Mark Patterson, #60 Flight Options Lexus: “Some of this pavement is just treacherous on the tires and it takes a lot of faith sometimes to stay at full throttle in the banking. It was a challenge to get the power down in some spots even when the tires were brand new, and it only got worse as the session wore on. But these are the conditions we will be racing in tomorrow, so at least we know what well be up against.”
#01 Memo Rojas/Scott Pruett, Telmex Lexus-Riley 7th
#61 Mark Wilkins/Burt Frisselle, Exchange Traded Gold Lexus-Riley 9th
#60 Mark Patterson/Oswaldo Negri, Flight Options Lexus-Riley 13th
#3 Randy Ruhlman/Shane Lewis, Preformed Line Products Lexus-Riley 18th

Grand Prix of Miami

Where: Homestead-Miami Speedway
Length: 400k/109 laps/2 hour, 30-minute time limit

LEXUS LOOKS TO BREAK HOMESTEAD HEX – A manufacturer’s championship, two team titles and a pair of Rolex 24 victories proves that Lexus-powered Daytona Prototypes can win every time the green flag flies. Yet, despite winning 16 of 42 races that the manufacturer has entered, the checkered flag has eluded Lexus at the Homestead-Miami Speedway.
To date, the manufacturer’s top Homestead finishes were a pair of thirds - by Oswaldo Negri and Burt Frisselle in 2004, and Scott Pruett and Luis Diaz last season. The 2004 race looked to be Lexus’ best shot at a Homestead win to-date when the manufacturer was running 1-2-3 heading into the final 15 minutes. Unfortunately, Diaz (#02 Ganassi) went off at the first turn while leading on a re-start and then Max Papis (#01 Lexus) and Jan Magnussen (#77 Lexus) staged one of the most memorable battles in Grand-Am history while running first and second. The two repeatedly banged doors while fighting for the lead, but the duel eventually took its toll – as both drivers went off track, losing any hope for victory.
PRUETT BRINGS POINTS LEAD TO HOMESTEAD – It’s no surprise when Scott Pruett (#01 Telmex Lexus-Riley) leads a series points race as he’s won six major sports car titles in eight full seasons since 1986. Yet, this weekend he’ll do something he’s never done – take sole possession of the Rolex Series points lead into a race. For the first time, Ganassi Racing split its full-time drivers at the Rolex 24, with Pruett remaining in the #01, while teammate Memo Rojas moved to the #02 entry. Pruett then teamed with Juan Montoya and Salvador Duran to win the race to separate his point total from his teammate.
TAKING AIM – No Rolex Series team has been a bigger surprise this season than the upstart AIM Autosport squad. After participating in just one Grand-Am event prior to this season, the Toronto-based team currently sits fifth in the team championship after registering a fifth at Daytona and a seventh in Mexico. The strong finish south of the border was even more impressive when the team was forced to start from the back of the field after an electrical problem resulted in no qualifying time. Full-time driver Mark Wilkins will team with Burt Frisselle this weekend after co-driving with Brian Frisselle at Mexico. The Frisselle brothers will alternate as Wilkins teammate for the remainder of the season.

GANASSI FOURTH AS LEXUS PUTS FOUR IN THE TOP-10 AT MEXICO CITY
After winning the season-opening Rolex 24 at Daytona, Lexus registered another strong performance in the Rolex Sports Car Series as the manufacturer placed four cars in the top-10 in Saturday’s Mexico City 400k at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
Chip Ganassi Racing's Memo Rojas and Scott Pruett combined to finish fourth as the highest-placing Lexus in their #01 Telmex Lexus-Riley. The finish marks the second consecutive top-five showing for the team and keeps Pruett on top of the series point standings. Earlier in the day, Pruett won the pole for tomorrow’s NASCAR Busch Series event.
The drive of the day may have belonged to the AIM Autosport duo of Mark Wilkins and Brian Frisselle. After starting 18th due to an electrical problem in qualifying, Wilkins quickly maneuvered his #61 Exchange Traded Gold Lexus-Riley up through the field. Eventually, he climbed as high as fourth before turning the car over to Frisselle, who re-joined the field in ninth and regained two positions in the last hour. The team has now finished in the top seven in each of the season’s first two races, despite having only one previous Rolex Series start prior to this year’s Rolex 24.
Michael Shank Racing also had an impressive day, placing two cars in the top 10. Mark Patterson and Oswaldo Negri earned their second consecutive ninth-place finish in the #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley after starting 12th, while their teammates Ian James and Henri Zogaib registered a 10th-place finish in the #6 Michael Shank Racing Lexus-Riley.
Southard Racing rounded out the Lexus contingent with a 15th-place finish, but the result wasn’t indicative of the strong run made by the #3 Preformed Line Products Lexus-Riley driven by Shane Lewis and Randy Ruhlman. Lewis was involved in a hotly-contested three-way battle for fifth-place through the mid-portion of the race and ran as high as sixth during the event before the team slipped back in the field late in the race.
The Homestead-Miami Speedway is next up for the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series on March 24 with SPEED providing same-day coverage.

Quotes:
Brian Frisselle, #61 Exchange Traded Gold Lexus-Riley: "I feel comfortable here; I feel comfortable on all high-speed tracks. The credit all goes to the crew: they gave Mark and I a great car. I can't thank Mark enough for making it easy on me, bringing the car up [through the field] – I didn't have to pass barely anyone. Overall, it's just a great result."
Mark Wilkins, #61 Exchange Traded Gold Lexus-Riley: "We overcame some adversity in the last couple of days. We missed a session, we missed qualifying and that hurt us, but we knew we had a great car. All the AIM guys just did a fantastic job. Our goal was to win the SunTrust award for most-improved position and if we accomplished that, it was a very successful race."
Michael Shank, MSR Team owner: “We’re happy to put this one in the books and get some good points towards the championship here this weekend. Running the full race without a yellow means you have to have some great driving and solid pit stops, and we got both today. Getting both cars into the top 10 can be difficult in this series with this level of competition, but the guys put in a lot of effort this weekend and it paid off today.”
Mark Patterson, #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley: “I was disappointed that I couldn’t quite match the times I was doing in practice earlier this weekend, but the car was great and I had a lot of fun out there. We were pretty conservative on the tires in the early going, but I was able to set some pretty quick laps late in my stint so that strategy paid off.”
Oswaldo Negri, #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley: “This was good for the points for us. I didn’t think enough about the championship last year, but I was really focused on that today, not taking unnecessary risks or jeopardizing the car. The guys did a great job all weekend, and now I am looking forward to a race in my hometown (Miami) at the end of the month.”
Henri Zogaib, #6 Michael Shank Racing Lexus-Riley: “That top-ten finish is exactly what we needed. Ian did an excellent job and I have goose bumps right now!”
Ian James, #6 Michael Shank Racing Lexus-Riley: “The first set of tires I had developed a pretty severe understeer. But the second set was excellent, and from there I was flat out to the end. My hats off to the guys because the car was just great. I was able to pass a lot of cars out there today to get the first top-10 of the year with Henri.”
