LEXUS TAKES SLIM LEAD INTO GRAND-AM SERIES FINALE IN UTAH

Coming off consecutive victories, the formula for Lexus to earn the Daytona Prototype Manufacturer’s Championship is simple – win and celebrate - as the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series heads to the new Miller Motorsports Park just outside of Salt Lake City, Utah, for the Discount Tire Sunchaser 9 Hours on Sept. 2.

Even without a race victory, with its current two-point lead Lexus can still claim the Manufacturer’s Championship provided that one of the following two scenarios occurs. A Lexus-powered prototype must either finish ahead of the highest finishing Pontiac, or finish one spot behind, as long as they don’t win.

This season, Lexus-powered cars have won a series-high six races (out of 13) and have led more laps than any other manufacturer with 893 circuits at the point position despite just three cars running with Lexus power-plants for the full season.

After victories at Watkins Glen and Infineon Raceway, Scott Pruett and Luis Diaz have established themselves as the most dominant duo in the series. Last weekend’s Sonoma triumph gave them five wins on the season, matching the Daytona Prototype single-season record. Only two mechanical failures and a pair of on-track incidents where their #01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley was caught up in other’s skirmishes keep them out of the Driver’s Championship lead. In fact, Pruett and Diaz have not only won five races compared to championship leader Jorg Bergmeister’s three, but the #01 car has led almost five times as many laps as that of the #76 car - 462 to just 94.

Joining Pruett and Diaz for the nine-hour event is 2003 Indy Racing League champion Scott Dixon, who led the Ganassi Racing #02 team car to victory in this year’s Rolex 24 at Daytona to start the season. With two podium finishes in his last three Grand-Am races, Dixon should be a strong asset.

Michael Shank Racing provides two more Lexus-powered entries that have consistently run upfront in 2006 with the #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley driven by Oswaldo Negri and Mark Patterson entering the finale eighth in the Team Championship point standings. Patterson also owns a commanding lead in the standings for the Jim Trueman Award. The #6 Playboy Racing Lexus team car currently sits 13th, just five points out of a top-10 finish for the season. Mike Borkowski will be joined by brothers Burt and Brian Frisselle for the nine-hour endurance test.

With six wins this season, Lexus-powered entries have now won 14 races and 18 pole positions in 39 Rolex Series events since entering the series in 2004.

The Rolex Series cars will take to the Miller Motorsports Park track on Wednesday for a promoter practice day before the weekend’s activities officially begin on Thursday with three practice sessions. Friday’s qualifying is scheduled for 4 p.m., with the green flag set to wave for the Discount Tire Sunchaser at 2 p.m. Saturday. SPEED will provide six hours of live race coverage with the network televising the first three and a half hours beginning at 2 p.m. and then rejoining for the finish beginning at 8:30 (all times EDT).

PRUETT, DIAZ MAKE STIRRING COMEBACK TO GIVE LEXUS SONOMA 250 WIN

It didn’t look good for the #01 CompUSA Lexus after Luis Diaz was knocked off the track while running third in the early going, but teammate Scott Pruett charged through the field from the 15th position to win Saturday’s Sonoma 250 Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series race at Infineon Raceway.

Diaz started the race in fourth and had moved up to third before being struck and spun off track by the #75 car on Lap 22. Diaz was able to continue, but not until after losing numerous positions on the race track. He pitted shortly afterward on the full-course caution and turned the car over to Pruett who re-entered the race in 15th.

He then methodically carved his way through the competition before taking the lead for good on Lap 74 when the leaders pitted. Pruett then stretched out to a 38-second lead before stopping for a quick splash of fuel on Lap 89. He maintained the lead through the stop and then faced one final challenge with a late-race yellow that created a five-lap shoot-out. The northern California native was more than up to the task and pulled out to an eventual margin of victory of 2.2 seconds.

The win is the fifth of the season for Pruett and Diaz and moves the duo into second place in the Driver’s Championship, just 19 points out of the series lead heading into the final race at Salt Lake City next weekend. In addition, the #01 car takes over the series Team Championship lead for Ganassi Racing, which holds a four-point advantage with one race remaining.

For Michael Shank Racing, the results weren’t indicative of a pair of strong runs that saw the team’s entries run in the top 10 throughout much of the race before each was given a penalty for contact on the race track. Brian Frisselle and Mike Borkowski registered an 11th-place finish in their Playboy Racing/Mears Lexus-Riley, while Oswaldo Negri and Mark Patterson placed two positions behind their teammates in 13th in their #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley.

The win was the sixth of the season for Lexus, which has now won 14 races in 39 Rolex Series events since entering the series in 2004. The manufacturer heads into next weekend’s season finale leading the Daytona Prototype Manufacturer’s Championship by just two points.

The Miller Motorsports Park in Salt Lake City, Utah, will play host to the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series season finale with the Discount Tire Sunchaser 9 Hours on Saturday, Sept. 2. SPEED will provide six hours of live race coverage with the network televising the first three and a half hours beginning at 2 p.m. and then rejoining for the finish beginning at 8:30 EDT.

Lexus results – Start/Finish

#01 Luis Diaz/Scott Pruett 3/1

#6 Mike Borkowski/Burt Frisselle 15/11

#60 Mark Patterson/Oswaldo Negri 19/13

Notes:

- Scott Pruett’s victory tonight extends his Daytona Prototype record for career wins to 12.

- Today’s victory set Lexus’ single-season high for wins with six after winning five in 2004.

- Ganassi Racing registered its sixth win of the season, setting a new team single-season record.

Quotes:

Scott Pruett, #01 CompUSA Lexus: "It was awesome. There’s nothing like winning on your home court. We dug deep to pull out everything we had learned through the years to win this one. It didn’t look good early, but we had a good stop and then used some great strategy. We ran lean through the midway part of the race to conserve as much fuel as we could. We knew that we had to make that last pit stop as short as possible. Once we figured out how much we needed, we turned up the wick and just kept going faster and faster and faster.”

Luis Diaz, #01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley: “We had a lot of bad luck in traffic early, but we were third and in a good spot to be fighting at the end. Then the #75 car just took me out. I had passed him (lapping him) and was clearly in front of him and he just didn’t brake (in Turn 7 before hitting Diaz’ car). On one hand, I’m unhappy about what happened on the race track. On the other, I’m happy for the team and the victory. (In regard to the crash) This is the second time they (the #75) have taken us out in three races. It’s not right what happened out there. We’ve always been clean and we’ve always raced like gentlemen and I hope Grand-Am does something about it.”

DIAZ QUALIFIES FOURTH TO LEAD LEXUS IN SONOMA QUALIFYING

Luis Diaz qualified fourth in his #01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley as the highest qualifying Lexus-powered car for Saturday’s Rolex Series 250 at Infineon Raceway.

Despite the strong effort, Diaz was somewhat disappointed with the qualifying session.

“I think today was frustrating for me because I wasn’t able to get a good lap in practice due to traffic,” said Diaz, who will team with Scott Pruett on Saturday. “I knew I could get a good lap in, but I started thinking about it, and had to just put one together. The car has definitely improved from the morning session for sure. Although we were fourth today, more importantly I think we have a very strong race car for tomorrow. I hope we can keep the championship fight alive,”

Brian Frisselle qualified 16th, while Mark Patterson was 20th for Michael Shank Racing. Frisselle is making this debut for the team alongside Mike Borkowski in the #6 Playboy Racing/Mears Lexus-Riley. Patterson will be joined by long-time teammate Oswaldo Negri in the #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley on Saturday.

“That was Mark’s (Patterson) best lap of the weekend, and he showed at the Glen that he can really move up well once the race starts,” said team owner Mike Shank. “We are a little disappointed with the results in qualifying for the Playboy Racing car because we just went the wrong way with the set-up. Brian did a good job, but the result doesn’t really show what he can do. But we know what we need to do to move up, and plan on doing exactly that tomorrow.”

Saturday’s Rolex Sports Car Series race at Infineon will be televised by SPEED on a one-day tape delay basis. The race will air Sunday at 3 p.m. EDT.

ROLEX SERIES TITLE COMES DOWN TO TWO-RACE SHOOT-OUT FOR LEXUS

After 12 regulation races, three qualifying events and almost 2,000 laps, Lexus’ Rolex Sports Car Series Manufacturer’s Championship hopes all come down to the season’s final two races. The series travels to Sonoma, Calif. this weekend before closing out the 2006 campaign in Salt Lake City on Labor Day the following week.

This season’s championship race has been hotly contested between Lexus, Porsche, Pontiac, Ford and BMW. Despite leading the series in wins (five) and laps led (867), Lexus heads to Sonoma one point out of the championship lead.

Fresh off a victory at Watkins Glen with the new Lexus 5.0-liter engine, Scott Pruett and Luis Diaz will lead the Lexus contingent at Sonoma in their #01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley. The duo lead the series in wins (4) and laps led (436 - more than 100 higher than the next team). They are currently third in points behind the leader.

Michael Shank Racing provides two more Lexus-powered entries that have consistently run upfront. Both of the team’s two cars have finished in the top-10 in each of the last four races.

Oswaldo Negri and Mark Patterson are coming off an impressive fourth-place showing at Watkins Glen and have registered five top-five finishes this season in their #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley. Patterson is currently ninth in points and has a commanding lead in the series Jim Trueman Award standings.

Mike Borkowski just keeps logging top-10 finishes in his #6 Playboy Racing/Mears Lexus-Riley regardless of his co-driver. After placing 10th along with Burt Frisselle at Watkins Glen, Borkowski will join Burt’s brother, Brian Frisselle, in the car this weekend. The two Frisselle brothers mark the third and fourth different co-drivers Borkowski has driven with in the last four races, yet the Cornell grad has notched a top-10 finish with each.

With five wins this season, Lexus-powered entries have now won 13 races and 18 pole positions in 38 Rolex Series events since entering the series in 2004.

Rolex Series action is expected to get underway with practice on Thursday afternoon, followed by Friday’s qualifying at 5:15 p.m. Saturday’s 250-mile event will see the green flag fall at 3:00 p.m. (PDT). SPEED will provide next-day coverage on Aug. 27 at 3:00 p.m. (EDT). This weekend’s race is being run in conjunction with the Indy Racing League.

The Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series will conclude its 2006 campaign on Sept. 2 at the Miller Motorsports Park in Utah.

LEXUS’ PRUETT SET FOR A HOME-COMING

Along with the rest of the Rolex Sports Car Series, Scott Pruett will make his first Daytona Prototype appearance at the Infineon Raceway, but is certainly no novice when it comes to the Sonoma, Calif., road course.

In fact, Pruett made his first appearance at Infineon (then known as Sears Point) some 30-odd years ago in a go-kart event early in his teens. Since that inauspicious beginning, Pruett has earned a top-three podium finish in every category that he’s raced on the circuit – including two wins and a pair of third-place finishes in Trans-Am competition, a third-place finish in IMSA GTO action and most recently, a third-place showing in the NASCAR Nextel Cup contest in 2004.

“I think we should be great at Sonoma,” said Pruett, who will drive the #01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley. “It’s my home-track and I love the place. With our car and our Lexus engine package, we should be really good. It’s certainly one of my most favorite tracks. It’s so close to home and so many of my friends and family are coming down who supported me for long. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Pruett not only leads the series in wins this season, but he’s also led almost 50% more laps than any of his competition. Along with his four wins, Pruett and co-driver Luis Diaz have teamed for a series-high seven top-three finishes. In addition, he also is the Daytona Prototype all-time leader in wins, poles and top-three podium finishes – and is showing no signs of slowing down.

Scott Pruett highlights at Infineon Raceway:

1984 – IMSA GTU – 6th place in his first pro start at Sonoma

1986 – Trans-Am - 3rd place

1987 – Trans-Am – 1st place

1988 – IMSA GTO – 3rd place

1988 – Trans-Am – 3rd place

2000 – NASCAR Nextel Cup – qualified 9th in first NASCAR start at Sonoma

2003 – Trans-Am – 1st place

2004 – NASCAR Nextel Cup – 3rd place

GANASSI DUO WIN WATKINS GLEN TO LEAD THREE LEXUS-POWERED CARS IN TOP-10

Scott Pruett made a pass for the lead on Lap 43 in his CompUSA Lexus-Riley and was never headed as he and co-driver Luis Diaz won Friday night’s Crown Royal 200 Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series race at Watkins Glen International.

Diaz started the race in fourth and never fell below that position on the way to handing off the car to Pruett in second-place on a full-course caution. Within a few laps, Pruett made his eventual race-winning pass on Guy Cosmo and then held off a strong challenge from Max Angelelli to earn his fourth victory of the season and the fifth for Ganassi Racing.

The strong run by Pruett and Diaz was just one of three impressive efforts registered by Lexus-powered entries as Michael Shank Racing (MSR) registered top-10 finishes by each of its entries for the fourth consecutive race.

Oswaldo Negri and Mark Patterson continued their impressive performances at Watkins Glen with a fourth-place finish in the #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley. They climbed from the 16th-starting position to earn their fourth top-five of the season and their fifth consecutive top-10 finish.

Joining Negri and Patterson in the top-10 were MSR teammates Mike Borkowski and Burt Frisselle, who logged a 10th-place finish in their #6 Playboy Racing Lexus-Riley despite battling clutch problems. With the result, Borkowski notched a unique feat in registering his fourth top-10 finish in a row with three different co-drivers.

With five wins this season, Lexus-powered entries have now won 13 races in 38 Rolex Series events since entering the series in 2004. The manufacturer heads into the final two races of the season trailing by just one point in the race for its first Daytona Prototype Manufacturer’s Championship.

The Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., is set to host the penultimate round of the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series on Sat., Aug. 26. SPEED will televise the race on a one-day delay basis on Aug. 27.

Quotes:

Scott Pruett: "It was awesome. The car was great and the engine ran flawlessly. Consider that the last thing you want to do is introduce a new engine in the middle of the season, but it was something that Grand Am really forced us into. But the way the Lexus and TRD guys reacted to come up with a great engine package to bring us to victory circle in just the second race is awesome. This engine doesn't have much time on it and there's still a lot of things we want to improve on it and I know that the Lexus guys will."

Burt Frisselle, #6 Playboy Racing/Mears Lexus-Riley: “I’m just bummed I wasn’t able to do more with the car because it was really good, but the clutch problem meant that I was losing out under braking because it was just taking longer to get the downshifts done. But I’m happy to get a top ten here and it’s been great to be back with these guys, and I am really looking forward to racing this car again at Miller (Salt Lake City).”

Oswaldo Negri, #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley: “This is awesome. Mark did another fantastic job at the start, and the car was strong enough to make some moves forward, so I’m really pleased with the result. Plus, it’s my daughter Nahalia’s birthday, so it was already a great day for me even before the race started.”

Mark Patterson, #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley: “The car was fantastic, and compared to where we were at Barber just starting out with the new Lexus, we have already moved well ahead. The car just got better as the laps went on, and I was really able to make up ground and fight and defend when I needed to, and Oz just did the rest of the work from there. A real credit to this team I think for the job they do, and it was quite a treat I think for our guests from Flight Options.”

DIAZ PUTS COMPUSA LEXUS ON SECOND ROW IN CROWN ROYAL 200 QUALIFYING

Luis Diaz qualified fourth in his #01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley as the highest qualifying Lexus-powered car for Friday night’s Crown Royal 200 at Watkins Glen International.

The Lexus-powered teams continue to make progress in the area of chassis set-up to go hand-and-hand with the new Lexus 5.0-liter engine, which will make just its second start of the season this weekend.

“I would guess we’ve made 30 percent progress with the chassis/engine set-up since the last race,” said Diaz, who will team with Scott Pruett. “We have a good starting spot for tomorrow. The engine keeps making gains along with the progress we’re making with the chassis. The increased fuel mileage should be a great benefit for the race.”

Mark Patterson occupied the second spot among the Lexus-powered drivers with a 16th for Michael Shank Racing (MSR) in the #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley. Patterson will be joined by long-time teammate Oswaldo Negri on Friday.

Burt Frisselle made his MSR debut in qualifying today with a 19th in the #6 Playboy Racing/Mears Lexus-Riley. Frisselle campaigned with the team during the 2004 season. He’ll team with Mike Borkowski for the race. Borkowski, a graduate of nearby Cornell, has finished sixth and seventh in the past two races.

Friday’s Crown Royal 200 is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. with SPEED providing same-day, tape-delayed coverage at 9:00 p.m. tomorrow evening (all times EDT).

LEXUS TEAMS PREPARE FOR CROWN ROYAL 200 AT WATKINS GLEN

After a weekend of growing pains at the Barber 250, where the Lexus-powered teams worked on new suspension set-ups to accompany the new Lexus 5.0-liter, V8 engine, the Lexus Daytona Prototype program is back on track at this weekend’s Crown Royal 200 at Watkins Glen International.

While the new Lexus power-plant brought some performance gains, particularly in the area of mileage, it also brought some challenges to the teams in terms of setting up their race cars to go along with the engine’s lower center of gravity and the re-proportioning of weight on the race car. As a result, each team struggled to find satisfactory grip on the race track.

“It’ll be exciting going back to the Glen with the 5.0-liter Lexus engine because we’re at the infancy of its development,” said Scott Pruett, driver of the #01 CompUSA Lexus and the series all-time win leader. “The engine continues to run better. It (the engine) wants something a little bit different set-up wise, and as we head to the Glen, there are a number of things we can try there. As we get a few more miles under our belt, we’re going to get better with the 5.0-liter, and I know TRD will continue to work to improve the overall package.”

Pruett and Diaz will once again lead the way in their Ganassi Racing Lexus-Riley and will enter this weekend’s contest third in points. The duo has earned three victories and seven top-three finishes this season. Pruett is the winningest driver in Daytona Prototype history with 10 victories – all coming with Ganassi Racing, which has earned 11 of Lexus’ 12 Rolex Series race triumphs.

The pair will be joined on the grid by the surging Michael Shank Racing team, which has registered top-10 finishes by both of its entries in the last three races.

Oswaldo Negri and Mark Patterson will team in the #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley having registered four consecutive top-10 finishes, including a fourth at Watkins Glen in June. Patterson enters this weekend’s action in ninth-place overall in points and leads the Jim Trueman Award standings.

Mike Borkowski will be back in the #6 Playboy Racing/Mears Lexus-Riley, and will have a new teammate this weekend as he’s joined by Burt Frisselle, who campaigned with MSR during the 2004 season. Borkowski has been one of the hottest drivers on the circuit in recent races, earning a sixth and a seventh in the last two races. The Crown Royal 200 will mark the first of three races Burt and his brother, Brian Frisselle, will campaign through the remainder of the season. Brian will make his debut with the team at the following race in Sonoma.

With four wins this season, Lexus-powered entries have now won 12 races and 18 pole positions in 37 Rolex Series events since entering the series in 2004.

The Crown Royal 200 is a two-day event with practice and qualifying scheduled for Thursday and the race on Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. with SPEED providing same-day coverage at 9 p.m. (all times EDT).
