PRUETT, DIAZ THIRD AS LEXUS PUTS THREE IN TOP-10 AT DAYTONA

Scott Pruett and Luis Diaz placed third to lead three Lexus-powered Daytona Prototypes into the top-10 in Thursday night’s Brumos 250 Rolex Sports Car Series race at the Daytona International Speedway.

Diaz led the first 22 laps in his #01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley in what would turn out to be a race largely decided by fuel mileage. Tonight’s podium finish marks the seventh top-three showing for Pruett and Diaz this season. The feat was made even more impressive after the team suffered extensive damage to their Riley chassis in a crash just five days ago at Mid-Ohio and were forced to run a car previously on display at the Ganassi shop.

“Although we didn’t get the result we really wanted, I have to thank the Ganassi guys for putting together a great car in a short amount of time,” said Pruett. “They took this car from the shop’s showroom and gave us a podium-worthy machine in four days.”

Joining the Ganassi duo in the top-10 were a pair of entries from Michael Shank Racing.

Paul Tracy joined the #6 Playboy Racing/Mears Motor Coach Lexus-Riley for the third time this season and co-drove to a sixth-place finish with Mike Borkowski. The pairing gained eight positions during the race after starting 14th.

MSR teammates Oswaldo Negri and Mark Patterson overcame an early off-road excursion to register a 10th-place finish – their third consecutive top-10 showing and their sixth of the season in the #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley.

The newest Lexus-powered entry, AIM Autosports’ #61 Lexus-Riley driven by Mark Wilkins and James Hinchcliffe finished 21st tonight after starting from the back of the starting grid, which was determined upon championship points. They ran as high as 15th late in the event.

With tonight’s third-place finish, Lexus extended its Daytona Prototype Manufacturer’s Championship lead to four points with just four races remaining.

After two races in a span of six days, the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series will have a full month off before reconvening at the Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Ala., for Round 11 of 14 on July 30.

LEXUS TAKES SLIM MANUFACTURER’S LEAD INTO DAYTONA

After holding a commanding Manufacturer’s Championship lead through most of the season, Lexus will take a slim two-point lead into Thursday’s Brumos 250 at the Daytona International Speedway due to a difficult run at Mid-Ohio this past weekend.

When Scott Pruett was collected by another car spinning across the track at Mid-Ohio, it ended Lexus’ chance for a potential podium finish and put a dent in a 13-point championship advantage. Fortunately, there’s help on the way.

The biggest news of the week comes with open-wheel star Paul Tracy scheduled to re-join Michael Shank Racing (MSR) for his third race of the season in the team’s Lexus-powered Riley. The Canadian again will partner with Mike Borkowski in the #6 Playboy Racing/Mears Motor Coach Lexus to form a combination that earned a third-place finish at Mexico, and also ran upfront in the season opening Rolex 24 at Daytona.

Tracy’s arrival further strengthens an MSR squad that earned a pair of top-10 finishes at Mid-Ohio. Oswaldo Negri and Mark Patterson earned their sixth top-10 finish of the season last weekend at Mid-Ohio in the #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley. The team’s strong second-place run in the season-opening Rolex 24 at Daytona should bode well this week.

The other new arrival on the scene this weekend is the #61 AIM Autosport Lexus-Riley entered by AIM Autosport for promising young open-wheelers James Hinchcliffe and Mark Wilkins. The Brumos 250 will be the first of three 2006 events for the team (Watkins Glen and Sonoma are the others). AIM also fields teams in Star Mazda and Formula BMW competition with both Hinchcliffe and Wilkins alumni of those programs. Wilkins will run all three races this season, while Daytona will be the lone appearance for Hinchcliffe due to conflicts with his Atlantic schedule. The 19-year-old recently won the Atlantic round at Portland.

Of course, you can’t talk about the Lexus Daytona Prototype program without prominently mentioning the Ganassi Racing #01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley driven by Scott Pruett and Luis Diaz. Currently second in points, the duo have earned three wins and four pole positions this season. Pruett is the series all-time leader in career Daytona Prototype victories.

With four wins this season, Lexus-powered entries have now won 12 races and 18 pole positions in 35 Rolex Series events since entering the series in 2004.

Thursday’s activities begin with two morning practices, followed by qualifying at 12:15 and the race, which will be shown live on SPEED, beginning at 7:00 p.m. (all times EDT). An IROC race will immediately follow the Rolex Series event.

HOME-TOWN BOYS MAKE GOOD FOR LEXUS AT MID-OHIO

Competing just down the road from its Columbus race shop, Michael Shank Racing (MSR) placed two Lexus-powered Rileys in the top-10 to lead Lexus in Saturday’s EMCO Gears Classic at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.

Leading the way was the duo of Mark Patterson and Oswaldo Negri who placed seventh in the #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley. After starting 11th, they ran in or around the top-10 throughout the event. It’s the second consecutive strong effort for Patterson and Negri after an impressive fourth at Watkins Glen and gave them six top-10 finishes this year.

They were joined in the top-10 by MSR teammates Mike Borkowski and Tommy Constantine who placed ninth in the #6 Playboy Racing/Mears Motor Coach Lexus-Riley. The pair started in 14th and moved up through the field while battling through heavy traffic. The ninth-place finish marks the third top-10 finish of the season for the #6 car.

Things didn’t go nearly as well for the #01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley and Ganassi Racing. After failing to pass technical inspection on Friday due to a chassis issue after qualifying second, drivers Luis Diaz and Scott Pruett were forced to start 26th. Diaz charged up through the field and eventually made his way into the top five before handing the car off to Pruett. The 2004 Daytona Prototype champion was running sixth and within striking distance of a top-three podium finish when his day came to a sudden end. The CompUSA Lexus was collected in a two-car crash involving Burt Frisselle and Hoover Orsi that was precipitated when Orsi hit Frisselle from behind and sending him spinning side-ways across the track and collecting Pruett. The end result was a 21st-place finish and Pruett and Diaz falling 26 points out of the series points lead.

The Ganassi duo weren’t the only ones who saw their championship battle affected by the crash. While continuing to lead the Rolex Sports Car Series Daytona Prototype Manufacturer’s Championship, Lexus saw its 13-point advantage dwindle to just two points after Mid-Ohio with five events remaining.

Next up for the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series is the Daytona International Speedway and the Brumos 250 on a rare one-day event, June 29. Thursday’s activities begin with two morning practices, followed by qualifying at 12:15 and a night race beginning at 7:00 p.m. which will be shown live on SPEED (all times EDT). An IROC race will immediately follow the Rolex Series event.

DIAZ PUTS LEXUS ON FRONT ROW AT MID-OHIO

Luis Diaz qualified second in his CompUSA Lexus-Riley in preparation for Saturday’s EMCO Gears Classic and gave Lexus its sixth front-row starting position of the year in the process.

Diaz’ strong effort gives Ganassi Racing its third consecutive front-row start in Rolex Sports Car Series competition and marks the seventh time this season that his #01 entry will start in the top-four.

Diaz will be joined by co-driver Scott Pruett who is in Sonoma, Calif., today to qualify for Sunday’s NASCAR NEXTEL Cup race at Infineon Raceway. Pruett was at Mid-Ohio on Thursday and registered the fastest time in each of the two practice sessions during the track’s test day.

Columbus-based Michael Shank Racing qualified two cars today with Mark Patterson registering a 14th in the #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley, while Tommy Constantine was 17th in the Playboy Racing/Mears Motor Coach Lexus-Riley. Oswaldo Negri will co-drive with Patterson and Mike Borkowski will join Constantine.

On Saturday, Lexus will be looking for its second victory in three Mid-Ohio Daytona Prototype events after winning in 2004 with Pruett and Max Papis. A year ago, Pruett and Diaz combined to finish second on the Lexington road course.

Lexus enters the weekend holding a 13-point lead in the Manufacturer’s Championship as Pontiac, Porsche and BMW are in the fight for second. In addition, Lexus will attempt to earn its 13th Daytona Prototype victory in 35 Rolex Series starts.

Saturday’s EMCO Gears Classic will be shown on a tape-delay basis on SPEED on Sunday, June 25, beginning at 3:00 p.m. EDT.

LEXUS’ HOMETOWN HEROES RETURN TO MID-OHIO

Technically, there is no home-field advantage in racing as there is in other major American sports, but don’t tell that to the Lexus-powered entries in this weekend’s EMCO Gears Classic at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.

For Michael Shank Racing (MSR), central Ohio doesn’t simply provide a home track, but it’s actually home for the Columbus-based team. After previously competing in the Toyota Atlantic Championship, team owner Michael Shank has methodically grown the team once affectionately known as “the little team that could” into one of the strongest teams in the Rolex Sports Car Series. Beginning with a one car effort in 2004, Shank moved up to one full-time and one part-time entry in 2005 and is now running two Lexus-Rileys for the entire 2006 campaign. After opening the season with a second-place overall finish at the Rolex 24 at Daytona, MSR has registered six top-five finishes and been on the podium three times.

Leading the way for MSR this weekend is the #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley driven by Oswaldo Negri and Mark Patterson. Coming off its fourth top-five finish of the season at Watkins Glen, the #60 has risen to eighth in team points heading into Mid-Ohio. In addition to their fourth at the Glen, the team also has a pair of seconds and a fifth-place finish to its credit in 2006. They’ll be joined in the MSR stable by the #6 Playboy Racing/Mears Motor Coach entry for Mike Borkowski and Tommy Constantine.

While Scott Pruett’s ties to Ohio may not run quite as deep as Shank’s, he will forever be linked to Ohio racing lore as a former driver for the TrueSports team owned by the late Jim Trueman, who’s family still owns the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course today. Pruett’s first full-time CART effort came with TrueSports where he earned 1989 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year honors, as well as capturing nine top-10 finishes to place eighth-place overall in the series.

Of course, Pruett’s time with TrueSports isn’t his lone connection to Mid-Ohio and Columbus. He will make his 18th career start at Mid-Ohio, where he has won in three different classes (IMSA GTO, Trans-Am and Daytona Prototypes) and had seven top-four finishes. In addition, Pruett also won his first-ever IMSA GTP race at the now defunct Columbus street race in 1987.

Pruett will team with Luis Diaz in the #01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley this weekend as the duo enter this weekend’s action in second-place in the series point standings with three 2006 victories to their credit.

Lexus currently holds a 13-point lead in the Manufacturer’s Championship as Pontiac, Porsche and BMW are in the fight for second heading into this weekend’s action. In addition, with four victories this season, Lexus-powered entries have now won 12 races and 18 pole positions in 34 Rolex Series events since entering the series in 2004.

Saturday’s EMCO Gears Classic will be shown on tape delay on Sunday, June 25 at 3 p.m. Friday’s Daytona Prototype qualifying session is scheduled at 4:25 p.m. (all times Eastern).

LEXUS MAINTAINS POINTS LEAD AS PATTERSON/NEGRI EARN FOURTH AT WATKINS GLEN

Mark Patterson and Oswaldo Negri drove their #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley to a fourth-place finish to lead the Lexus-powered contingent in Saturday’s Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen in rainy and difficult conditions at Watkins Glen International.

The Michael Shank Racing duo started eighth and ran with the leaders throughout the six-hour event. The race featured a stirring drive by Patterson, who climbed from eighth up to third in the final 90 minutes of the contest in what was probably the most impressive outing of his first full season of Daytona Prototype competition. A late-race pit stop dropped the pairing to fourth, where Negri charged back to become involved in a three-way duel for second, but was unable to squeeze by, finishing fourth - their third top-five finish of the season. Patterson currently sits ninth in the points chase, just two points out of eighth.

Joining Negri and Patterson in the top 10 were Scott Pruett and Luis Diaz who placed seventh after starting from the pole in their #01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley. The changing weather conditions went against the Ganassi Racing team today, but they still managed to capture their seventh top-10 finish in eight starts this season. Pruett and Diaz slipped out of the series points lead down to second, but are just four points out of the top spot in the Driver’s Championship.

The second MSR entry with Mike Borkowski, Tommy Constantine and Paul Mears Jr. in the Playboy Racing/Mears Motor Coach Lexus Riley lost a lap early, but fought back to earn a solid 14th-place finish today.

With today’s result, Lexus continues to hold a commanding lead in its hunt for a first Rolex Sports Car Series Daytona Prototype Manufacturer’s Championship with a 13-point advantage over rivals such as Porsche, BMW, Ford and Pontiac.

The Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series returns to action on June 24 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course for the EMCO Gears Classic. The race will be run Saturday night with the green flag scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The race will be televised on a tape-delayed basis on SPEED the following day, June 25, at 3:00 p.m. (all times EDT).

“Quotes”

MARK PATTERSON, #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley: “That was fantastic! Oz told me to trust the car, and I did, and I was able to go up the hill completely flat out even though it was still a bit wet so I was able to get by Andy Wallace (for third-place). He gave me exactly enough room to do it safely, an utter professional. After Phoenix, we decided that we didn’t need to take the big chances, to focus on getting to the finish in every race, and to make the most of the fantastic package that Mike Shank and his team brings to the track every race weekend, and I think this result is a just reward for putting our heads down and getting on with the job. With a championship as tight as this one, every point is precious and if we can keep it up with these kinds of finishes we should be in decent shape.”

OSWALDO NEGRI, #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley: “I am so proud of Mark and the progress he has made in the car. He is really an incredible natural talent, and he really motivates everyone around him. The Lexus motor we had was excellent as always, and the guys did a great job with our pit strategy and with tire selection all day. We made some good compromises with the set-up for the race, and I think we went in exactly the right direction so we could be competitive no matter what the conditions were.”

SCOTT PRUETT, #01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley: “There’s really not much to say after a day like today. Weather had a big part in the outcome. I think we had to make some big calls on tire choices when it mattered, and that hurt a bit because we were down a lap when it all started to unravel. Seventh is still a strong showing, but this team always strives for the best. The car just wasn’t where we would have liked it to have been this weekend.”

LUIS DIAZ, #01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley: “A couple times we had to make a call on tires, and it’s a tough situation when the team was faced with the conditions we had out there for six hours. It was constantly changing throughout the event. Although, we didn’t get the result we wanted today, we are still focused on the championship, and that remains the priority, win or lose.”

PAUL MEARS, #6 Playboy Racing/Mears Motor Coach Lexus-Riley: “I had a lot of fun out there. It felt like I had some rust to knock off not having been in the car for so long, but once I got some laps under my belt I was fine. It was also a blast watching Mark (Patterson) making those passes!”

MIKE BORKOWSKI, #6 Playboy Racing/Mears Motor Coach Lexus-Riley: “It was tough out there because once we got a lap down, we just wanted to make sure we stayed out of trouble to get to the finish and not ruin anyone else’s race. Tommy Constantine did a great job in his first run with us, and it was also great to have Paul Mears racing with us again. I’m looking forward to Mid-Ohio because we had a good car there last year, but not a good race, so I think we can be strong there at the team’s home track.”

COMPUSA LEXUS-RILEY TO START ON POLE; NEGRI THIRD QUICK IN SAHLEN’S SIX-HOUR PRACTICE

Scott Pruett and Luis Diaz will start from the pole in their #01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley in Saturday’s Sahlen’s Six Hours at the Glen Rolex Sports Car Series event after the decision was made to set the grid by points after Thursday’s practice sessions were cancelled.

On Friday, Pruett and Diaz registered the ninth-fastest time overall, but it was Oswaldo Negri who logged the fastest time by a Lexus-powered Daytona Prototype with the third-quickest lap of the day in the #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley that he’ll share with Mark Patterson on Saturday. They’ll start the six-hour event from the eighth position tomorrow.

Negri’s Michael Shank Racing teammate Mike Borkowski also had a strong run today in the newly-liveried #6 Playboy Racing/Mears Motor Coach Lexus-Riley with Paul Mears Jr. and Tommy Constantine, who is making his debut with the team this weekend. They will start 16th.

Lexus will be looking for its third victory in six Daytona Prototype events at Watkins Glen after having won the 2004 six-hour event with Pruett and Max Papis, as well as the 2004 August event with Jan Magnussen and Didier Theys behind the wheel. Last year, Pruett and Diaz earned a third-place finish in the six hours, and were second in the September event with Negri and Patterson third.

Pruett and Diaz currently own a seven-point lead in the series Driver’s Championship, while Lexus holds a 17-point advantage in the Manufacturer’s Championship.

Saturday’s Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen will be shown live in its entirety on SPEED beginning at 2:30 p.m. EDT.
