LEXUS HEADS TO THE GLEN LEADING AT THE GRAND-AM MIDWAY POINT
With four victories in the first seven races this season, the Lexus Daytona Prototype begins the second-half of the Rolex Sports Car Series in first-place with hopes of maintaining that status quo at this weekend’s Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen at Watkins Glen International.
Lexus currently holds a 17-point lead in the Manufacturer’s Championship as Pontiac, Porsche and BMW are in the fight for second following the most recent Lexus victory at Phoenix International Raceway, May 13.
Leading the way for the manufacturer is the duo of Scott Pruett and Luis Diaz in their #01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley. The pair has registered three wins and five top-three finishes while moving into the Driver’s Championship points lead by seven points. In addition, their Ganassi Racing team also was triumphant in the season-opening Rolex 24 at Daytona in a Lexus-powered entry led by open-wheel star Scott Dixon.
Few drivers, if any, have more experience at Watkins Glen than Pruett. In addition to five previous Daytona Prototype starts at the track, he has raced at the track in no less than seven other major racing series – NASCAR NEXTEL Cup, Busch, IROC, IMSA GTP, IMSA GTO, IMSA GTU and Trans-Am. Amazingly enough, he’s had at least one top-five finish at Watkins Glen in every one of those series, except Busch, where he placed eighth in 2001 after setting the track record in qualifying. Pruett teamed with Max Papis to win the 2004 Sahlen’s Six Hours on his way to the Daytona Prototype championship. Pruett and Diaz teamed to finish second at the Glen in September after a third-place finish in last year’s six-hour event.
Also on the victory podium last September was the combination of Oswaldo Negri and Mark Patterson with a third-place finish. They’ll return in their #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley for Michael Shank Racing. Patterson currently sits ninth in points, while Negri fell to 17th after missing the Phoenix race. The pair has endured a rollercoaster-type season with a pair of seconds among three top-five finishes, and a number of DNFs.
Michael Shank Racing also will enter the #6 Mears Motor Coach Lexus-Riley for drivers Mike Borkowski and Paul Mears. The race will feature a homecoming of sorts for Borkowski, who attended Cornell University in upstate New York. He notched a season-best third at Mexico.
With four victories this season, Lexus-powered entries have won 12 races and 18 pole positions in 33 Rolex Series events since entering the series in 2004.
Saturday’s Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen will be televised live on SPEED in its entirety at 2:30 p.m. with qualifying scheduled for Friday at 4:15 p.m. (all times Eastern).

DIAZ, PRUETT PUT LEXUS IN PHOENIX WINNER’S CIRCLE
Luis Diaz and Scott Pruett combined to lead more than 100 laps in earning Lexus its fourth Rolex Sports Car Series victory of the season in Saturday night’s Gainsco Grand Prix at Phoenix International Raceway.
Diaz moved his #01 CompUSA Lexus Riley into the lead on Lap 8 and other than relinquishing the top spot while pitting, they gave up the lead for only 18 laps over the remainder of the 149-lap event in notching their third victory of the season. The triumph moved Diaz and Pruett back into the series points lead and made Pruett the first driver in Daytona Prototype history to register 10 wins.
Things didn’t go nearly as well for Michael Shank Racing (MSR) after a promising start to the weekend. A crash during Friday’s qualifying race resulted in a one-race suspension for Oswaldo Negri, the lead driver on the #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley. The team was forced to recruit a replacement driver to join Mark Patterson with less than 24 hours notice and tabbed Scotsman Rod MacLeod to fill the role. The end result was a 16th-place finish.
The second MSR entry with Mike Borkowski and Antoine Bessett appeared to be a contender for top honors as Bessette ran in the top-five early. Unfortunately, the strong effort from the Canadian went for naught when Bessette was knocked off-track by one of the GT entries while running in sixth, forcing the #6 Mears Motor Coach Lexus-Riley to retire early in 23rd-place. After finishing an impressive fifth in Friday’s qualifying race, Borkowski wasn’t even able to climb into the car due to the early retirement.
Tonight’s victory is the 12th for Lexus in three years of Grand Am competition and, combined with the second in yesterday’s qualifying race, gives the luxury automaker a commanding lead over Porsche in the Manufacturer’s Championship race.
The Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series returns to action on June 3 at Watkins Glen International for the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen. The race will be shown live and in its entirety on SPEED beginning at 2:30 p.m. (ET).

“Quotes”
SCOTT PRUETT, #01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley: “Luis did a great job team. Really the whole team did. Our pit stops were strong, Lexus gave us a good engine and the tires were good throughout. This might be the toughest track we go to all year.
LUIS DIAZ, #01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley: “This is a great win for us. We came here without testing, while four or five of the other teams came here for at least a day, so we really didn’t expect this type of result. The Lexus power helped us a bunch and it really made a difference today. We really have to give a lot of the credit to the entire team. They did a great job today.”

PRUETT LEADS LEXUS-POWERED ENTRIES INTO TOP 10 IN PHOENIX QUALIFYING; TO START ON FRONT ROW AT PIR
Scott Pruett led a strong Lexus effort with a second-place finish as all three Lexus-powered Daytona Prototypes finished in the top 10 in Friday night’s qualifying race at Phoenix International Raceway in preparation for Saturday’s Gainsco Grand Prix.
Pruett started second in his #01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley and maintained the position throughout the 30-minute event. The strong showing in the full points-paying race moved he and co-driver Luis Diaz to within just four points of the series lead, as well as secured the duo a front-row starting spot for Saturday’s feature race.
Michael Shank Racing driver Mike Borkowski placed fifth in the #6 Mears Motor Coach Lexus-Riley, his best finish since placing third at Mexico City in the season’s second event. He will co-drive with impressive rookie Antoine Bessett on Saturday.
Oswaldo Negri also was in the thick of the hunt on Friday night, battling for a top-five finish before tangling with the #39 Cheever Racing entry that triggered a multi-car crash on the tight Phoenix course. While Negri was able to continue on in the #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley, he was given a one-minute penalty for his role in the incident and dropped out of the top-10 and into 17th. He will campaign the car with teammate Mark Patterson Saturday.
Saturday night’s Gainsco Grand Prix will be televised on a next-day tape delay on SPEED at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 14 and will be replayed on May 16 at noon.
Mike Borkowksi, #6 Mears Motor Coach Lexus-Riley: “These races are pretty intense!. The car was good, and everything is so close in Rolex now that you just have to capitalize when you get the chance. It’s great for Antoine to be starting so close to the front, and hopefully we can stay out of trouble tomorrow night and score some more points toward the championship.”
Scott Pruett, #01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley: “We went out there and just didn't try to do anything but be smart and get whatever points we could. I'm happy for the team because we had some problems in the first qualifying race, which unfortunately put us at the back of the pack for the start at Virginia, even though we had a good result. We're looking for the points. We learned a few things about the car tonight, but it's been a pretty tough weekend. This is a tough track. It's tight, it's tough, it's slippery and you just can't have many miscues."

Lexus Anticipates ALMS Debut as New IS 350 GT2 Nears Completion
Since Lexus’ announcement in December that Team Lexus will field two IS 350s in the 2006 American Le Mans Series (ALMS) GT2 class, the team has been hard at work preparing the cars for their first racing season. The new cars will challenge GT2-class stalwarts Porsche and Panoz while taking on new entries from Ferrari and BMW.
“Although we’d love to be racing this weekend in Houston, building a new, competitive, GT2 car from the ground up is a complex undertaking,” said Team Lexus owner Chuck Goldsborough. “Our team has been working very hard to design and build the new cars, with inevitable challenges along the way. Once complete, the task of development then starts and must ramp up very quickly.”
The level of ALMS GT2 competition underscores the challenges inherent in building a sedan to compete on even terms. Top GT2 competitors include the Porsche 911 GT3 RSR, Ferrari 430 GT, Panoz Esperante GTLM and BMW M3—all formidable cars.
With its production-based V6 providing more than 450 hp to propel a race car weighing less than 2,800 lbs., the new IS 350 GT2 promises to be plenty quick. The car also will retain its double wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension, suitably modified for the task and tuned to work with the large BBS-mounted Michelin racing slicks. StopTech will provide an upgraded brake package.
The team expects to begin testing in the next few weeks with the goal of a race debut in July. But the final decision on race timing will be based on test and development program results. “With the majority of the ALMS schedule taking place after July 1, it simply makes sense to be patient and develop the car properly,” said Philip Gaviola, Lexus motorsports manager. “And with the caliber of competition in the GT2 class, it’s going to be a steep learning curve regardless of when the IS 350 makes its debut.”

LEXUS LOOKS FOR A REVERSAL OF FORTUNE AT PHOENIX
Last weekend, the Lexus Daytona Prototype program went through a complete reversal of fortune from a year ago. After winning both the pole and the race in 2005, misfortune affected both teams at Laguna Seca Raceway in last Sunday’s race. If the same phenomenon holds true in this weekend’s Gainsco Grand Prix, the Lexus camp should walk away with its first Phoenix victory in three years.
This past weekend, a controversial call cost Oswaldo Negri and co-driver Mark Patterson’s the possibility of their first victory in the #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley. Ironically, it was a year ago at Phoenix where Negri and Mike Borkowski were handed another controversial penalty while leading late in the race, costing them the win at Phoenix International Raceway. Their only solace from this past weekend was gained in registering a second-place finish in the qualifying race last Saturday.
Negri’s not the only one hoping the pendulum swings the other way at PIR this year. Scott Pruett and Luis Diaz dominated the first half of the 2005 race at PIR, stretching out a 17-second lead before a mid-race yellow bunched up the field. Unfortunately, Pruett was hit while leading and crashed. The offending driver was parked and then suspended for the following week, but unfortunately, the contact ended not only the Ganassi team’s chances for the win, but also their hopes for a repeat Daytona Prototype championship.
Pruett and Diaz have registered a pair of victories this season at Mexico City and Long Beach and may have been headed for a third triumph at Laguna Seca last weekend before being knocked off the track while running in third place at the midway point of the event. They enter this weekend’s action in third-place in the championship race, just 12 points out of the top spot.
Borkowski, too, will look for redemption at PIR after last year’s controversial call. He’s back in the same #6 Mears Motor Coach Riley he drove for Michael Shank Racing a year ago, but this time, he’ll be joined by French Canadian rookie Antoine Bessette, who was impressive in his debut at Laguna Seca a week ago. The pairing had a strong top-10 run at Laguna last weekend before getting involved in one of the race’s many incidents.
Lexus enters this weekend’s competition in second-place in the Daytona Prototypes Manufacturer’s Championship, trailing Porsche by seven points. With three victories this season, Lexus-powered entries have won 11 races and 18 pole positions in 32 Rolex Series events since entering the series in 2004.
Saturday night’s Gainsco Grand Prix will be televised on a next-day tape delay on SPEED at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 14 and will be replayed on May 16 at noon. Friday’s schedule will feature the third of five full points-paying “Qualifying races” that will determine the starting positions for Saturday’s main event. The qualifying race will run at 9:45 p.m. (all times Eastern).

CONTROVERSIAL CALL COSTS NEGRI, LEXUS SHOT AT LAGUNA WIN
With less than thirty laps to go in the Road & Track 250, it appeared that Oswaldo Negri was on the way to his first Daytona Prototype victory and Lexus’ fourth of the season only to see a controversial officials’ call drop him from the lead all the way back to 19th-place at Laguna Seca Raceway Sunday.
The controversial call came on Lap 60 when Negri’s Michael Shank Racing #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley was leading the race and heading down the front straight when a full-course caution was called. The pace car began to roll as Negri was heading full speed into Turn One. After the pace car came out behind the Brazilian, Grand Am officials declared that he was to blame for the pace car not catching him as he led the field and penalized the team by sending it to the back of the pack and out of contention for the victory. Despite the penalty, Negri climbed back up to finish 11th.
The incident was just one of many that saw the pace car lead 35 of the 88 laps in a race that was shortened from a scheduled 112 laps due to the two-hour, 45-minute time limit. Unfortunately, two of the other incidents also affected Lexus-powered cars and cost each a top-10 finish and, in the case of Scott Pruett and Luis Diaz, a potential victory as well.
Pruett and Diaz’ shot at a win was lost on Lap 41 when the #5 car made contact with Pruett in his #01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley while Pruett was running in third-place. The contact sent the Lexus-powered car off-course and dropped him to 25th-place. Down, but not out, Pruett rallied to record an eventual 10th-place showing – the top finish by a Lexus-powered car today. The duo remain in third-place overall in points.
The #6 Mears Motor Coach Lexus-Riley driven by Mike Borkowski and Antoine Bessette also had a top-10 run going before he, too, was knocked off track by the #5 entry. Borkowski eventually recovered for a 13th-place finish. The race was the debut performance in Rolex Sports Car Series action for the impressive Canadian Bessette, a graduate of the Toyota Atlantic Championship.
The Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series returns to action next weekend at Phoenix International Raceway for the Gainsco Grand Prix on Saturday race. Next weekend’s activities also will include the series third of five full points-paying qualifying races to be run on Friday and also will set the grid for Saturday’s feature race.
Lexus results – Start/Finish
#01 Luis Diaz/Scott Pruett 6/10
#60 Mark Patterson/Oswaldo Negri 2/13
#6 Paul Mears Jr./Mike Borkowski 10/13
“Quotes”
OSWALDO NEGRI, #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley: “I don’t understand it at all. It completely ruined our race and a chance at a win today. The car was perfect, the crew did a great job, and I know we would have been strong at the end, but I guess it just wasn’t our day today.”
MARK PATTERSON, #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley: “It’s a shame to be officiated out of a win like that. Clearly Oz was in control of the race, so to have all this work taken away is very disappointing.”
MICHAEL SHANK, MSR team owner: ““It’s really disappointing. Both cars were obviously very competitive today, and to have it all thrown away by a tough call by the officials is very frustrating.”
SCOTT PRUETT, #01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley: “We struggled a little from the start this weekend to be honest. But getting hit and spun around halfway through the race never helps. There was a lot of contact out there today all around, and unfortunately we were the victims in a big one that sent us back to 25th after we were running in third. It’s frustrating because we kept fighting and clawing our way back into the race. Points-wise we came out okay, but this could have been our day. Laguna’s always been one of my favorite circuits. It’s just a classic road racing layout. This was a great event– it’s just too bad we couldn’t repeat our win from last year.”
LUIS DIAZ, #01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley: “I think we, as a team, struggled to find the setup this weekend, and although it might not have shown today in the race, we still had our work cut out for us. The championship is the most important thing, and we’ll stay focused on that. Coming home 10th today after what we endured is what I’m thinking about. Scott gave it his all, and we’ll be strong in Phoenix next Saturday night.”
MIKE BORKOWSKI, #6 Mears Motor Coach Lexus-Riley: “I guess Valiante wasn’t happy just sending the Ganassi car into the gravel trap, and wanted to do the same to me. Maybe he just didn’t like that I’d passed him, I don’t know, but he just crashed right into me. And poor Oz (Negri) was right behind us and he had to go off track to make sure I didn’t hit him.”
ANTOINE BESSETTE, #6 Mears Motor Coach Lexus-Riley: “This is fun. You have to be very careful out there because you are running very close with the other cars, but you can’t mistake that for a chance to pass just because you are close. You really have to set up a pass to do it cleanly in the traffic. It was also different for me because I had to keep in mind saving the car a little bit for Mike (Borkowski), so it was a different challenge than running in formula cars, and I really can’t wait to race again soon.”

NEGRI EARNS SECOND IN LAGUNA QUALIFYING RACE; PUTS LEXUS ON FRONT ROW
After registering the second-fastest time of the final practice to start second, Oswaldo Negri went on to earn his second runner-up finish of the season in Saturday’s full-points paying qualifying race at Laguna Seca and put his #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley on the front row for Sunday’s Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series main event at the Road & Track 250.
In Saturday’s race, Negri hounded the winning entry of Patrick Long throughout the half-hour event, closing to within less than a half-a-second at one point, but fell just 0.940-seconds short of his first Daytona Prototype victory. With the second-place finish, Negri and teammate Mark Patterson moved into fifth-place in the series points race. In addition, he earned the team’s second consecutive front-row start at Laguna after winning the pole a year ago.
Negri led all three Lexus-powered prototypes into the top-10 as Scott Pruett earned a sixth-place finish in the #01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley and Mike Borkowski notched a 10th-place finish in his Mears Motor Coach Riley.
Sunday’s Road & Track 250 will be televised live on SPEED at 3 p.m. with a replay on Monday, May 8 at 12 p.m.
Oswaldo Negri, #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley: “The start was good, everyone was very aggressive but clean. I was just trying to pressure the Porsche into making a mistake, but unfortunately he did a really good job and never made one. It’s a good finish and I’m really happy to get the points for Michael Shank Racing. Mark (Patterson) is even faster than he was here last year, and I know he’s going to do a fantastic job for us tomorrow.”
Mike Borkowksi, #6 Mears Motor Coach Lexus-Riley: “I had a good run at the start, but one of the guys went off ahead of me and then came right back onto the track, so I had to check up and I just got freight trained. So I had to work just to get back up to tenth, and we just ran out of laps to make up any more ground. But the car is good, and I know Antoine (Bessette) will be able to make the most of a top-10 start tomorrow.”
Scott Pruett, #01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley: “The car was just really loose-in and loose-off the corners. It seemed like everyone got so jammed up at the start that we couldn’t go anywhere. It’s tough to get off to a good start when you’re boxed in like that. So as a result, we were beating and banging on each other in the pack while the guys who started out front got to stretch their legs a bit. It’s a tough deal, but we made the most of it, and we’ll be ready to challenge them in the race tomorrow.”

PAST SUCCESS BODES WELL FOR LEXUS AT LAGUNA SECA
If past success is any indicator, then the U.S. Sports Car Invitational at Laguna Seca Raceway should prove to be a very good weekend for the Lexus Daytona Prototype program when the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series hits the track May 5-7.
A year ago, Scott Pruett and Luis Diaz took home the victory in the #01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley in the series’ first event on the 2.238-mile, 11-turn road course. The duo is off to another strong start for Ganassi Racing with two victories and four podium finishes this season. The pair will enter this weekend’s races in third-place in the series points chase. In addition to the Daytona Prototype triumph last season, Pruett also won at Laguna on his way to the 1986 IMSA GTO championship.
While it was Pruett and Diaz who came away with the victory at Laguna Seca in 2005, it’s fellow Lexus pilot Oswaldo Negri who owns the distinction of being the track record-holder after winning the pole last season with a lap of 1:24.787 (95.508 mph). Making that record even more impressive is the fact that it occurred in the first race for the #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley with Michael Shank Racing (MSR). With three top-six finishes this season, Negri and co-driver Mark Patterson are currently 10th in the driver points standings.
The third Lexus-powered entry has also enjoyed success at Laguna Seca as Mike Borkowski co-piloted his MSR entry to a fifth-place finish last season. Rookie Antoine Bessette will join Borkowski in the #6 Graydon Elliott Fusion Racing Lexus-Riley. The 24-year-old Canadian had an impressive test for the MSR team at Virginia International Raceway prior to the last event. In addition, he placed fourth overall in last year’s Toyota Atlantic Championship, winning at Toronto and Montreal on the way to registering nine top-five finishes.
Lexus maintains a slim one-point lead over Porsche in the Daytona Prototype Manufacturer’s Championship after six of 19 races. With three victories this season, Lexus-powered entries have won 11 races and 18 pole positions in 31 Rolex Series events since entering the series in 2004.
This Sunday’s U.S. Sports Car Invitational will be televised live on SPEED at 3 p.m. with a replay on Monday, May 8 at 12 p.m. Saturday’s schedule will feature the second of five full points-paying “Qualifying races” that will determine the starting positions for Sunday’s main event. The qualifying race will run at 4:00 p.m. (all times Eastern).
