Scott Pruett came out on the short end of a thrilling last-lap, three-car battle at Virginia International Raceway, but still came away with a strong third-place finish for he and co-driver Luis Diaz as the top finishing Lexus-powered car in today’s Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series VIR 400.
Pruett had been running in second-place in his #01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley when he made a daring pass for the lead with just three turns remaining. As he pulled alongside leader Max Angelelli, the pair banged doors a couple of times before Angelelli moved to block Pruett, but left an opening for third-place Mike Rockenfeller to bump his way past the Italian for the win.
The third-place showing was the fourth podium finish of the season for Pruett and Diaz in six 2006 events. Diaz was forced to start today’s race from the back of the pack in the pit lane after changing an engine after yesterday’s qualifying race. After maneuvering his way through the field, Diaz led 16 laps to continue the team’s streak as the only car to lead every race this season.
The result wasn’t quite as good for Michael Shank Racing’s two entries. After starting sixth, Mark Patterson did a strong job maintaining his position in the #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley in the early going. The team made a driver change on an early full-course caution with Oswaldo Negri climbing in the car. Negri then carved his way through the field to run in the second position for an extended stretch through the middle of the race before his day went awry. A slight problem in the pits cost the team a few positions, but things still looked good for the team to be in the thick of things at the finish before a late-race re-start resulted in another car making contact with Negri and cutting the Brazilian’s rear tire forcing an extra pit stop which dropped the car to an eventual 13th-place finish.
Negri and Patterson did enjoy an impressive sixth-place finish in Saturday’s qualifying event – the first of five this season that will result in an overall 19-race schedule.
MSR teammates Mike Borkowski and Paul Mears Jr. also enjoyed a top-10 finish on Saturday with a 10th, but they, too, suffered difficulties in today’s event as they retired in the 23rd position after an alternator belt came loose during Borkowski’s run. For Borkowski, Saturday’s event marked his third top-10 finish of the season in the #6 Graydon Elliott Fusion Racing Lexus-Riley.
Today’s third-place finish allows Lexus to maintain its slight lead over Porsche in the Daytona Prototypes Manufacturer’s Championship after six races of the 19-round title chase.
The Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series returns to action at Laguna Seca Raceway, May 4-6, where the series will conduct a 30-minute race on Saturday, as well as a 250-mile event on Sunday. In addition to paying full points, Saturday’s event also will set the grid for Sunday’s race.

“Quotes”
SCOTT PRUETT, #01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley: “It was a great race. There’s not much more to say really. If you like racing, then you would have loved to watch this one I can tell you. It just doesn’t get any better than that the way the top-three finished. The first three cars were dueling it out for at least the last 20 laps. This kind of finish just shows that it’s not over until the fat lady sings.”
LUIS DIAZ, #01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley: “From my point of view, it was a challenging start coming off pit lane and making up spots where we could. But my main focus was just keeping the nose clean, picking people off one at a time and then getting the car back to Scott in one piece. Scott’s the man, he ran a great race and we almost did it here again today at VIR.”
OSWALDO NEGRI, #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley: “It’s a shame because we were almost exactly where we wanted to be. I don’t know how it was that he broke the back of my car, because he hit me on the side, but he just kept banging and I had to come in because I could feel the tire was going down.”
MARK PATTERSON, #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley: “It was a great battle with a bad outcome. There wasn’t as much grip as there was this morning in the warm up, which made things a little extra interesting in the first few laps. The guys on the front row were incredibly patient at the start, so we had a good-looking and safe start. Fortunately, some of the cars around me didn’t quite get the same start as I did, so I was able to get a couple spots right out of the box. Even though there was a very tight pack up at the front, it was unbelievably clean racing. I still can’t believe that people overlooked Oz to drive their cars, but that worked out well for us.”
MICHAEL SHANK, MSR team owner: “It is too bad what happened with Oz, because we obviously had a good car, and there was a great battle for the lead late in the race, so he probably would have been in the thick of that if we didn’t have to make that extra pit stop. But that’s racing. Our car is pretty banged up from everyone hitting us - front, side, and back, but nothing serious, so we’ll be packing up and getting ready to head to Laguna.”

LEXUS TAKES HOT STREAK INTO VIR 400
Fresh off a victory at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, Lexus will attempt to win its fourth Daytona Prototype race in five Grand American Rolex Sports Cars Series events this season when the green flag falls for Sunday’s VIR 400k at the Virginia International Raceway.
With a pair of victories and a third-place finish in the last three races, the Ganassi Racing tandem of Scott Pruett and Luis Diaz have taken over the series points lead in their #01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley. The duo are the defending race champions, having won at VIR last October after starting from the outside of the front row.
“Last year, we had a car capable of winning pretty much the whole weekend – the Lexus power was excellent,” said Pruett. “We needed that win to keep our chances alive to have a shot at the title in Mexico City. So in some respects, that was our most important win of the year. VIR is a great layout, and Luis and I look forward to defending our title.”
In addition to the team’s victories this year at Mexico City and Long Beach with Pruett and Diaz, Ganassi Racing earned a third triumph this season at the Rolex 24 with Scott Dixon, Casey Mears and Dan Wheldon behind the wheel. The team is the most successful in Daytona Prototype history – holding records in wins (10), poles (17) and podium finishes (24); while Pruett is the most successful Daytona Prototype pilot ever with career records for wins (9), pole positions (7) and podium finishes (19).
After struggling at Mexico and Homestead, Oswaldo Negri and Mark Patterson put the Michael Shank Racing (MSR) #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley back on track with a strong fifth-place finish at Long Beach as they charged through the field from the 15th starting position. The result marked the team’s second top-five finish of the season after a second at Daytona and moved Negri and Patterson into ninth-place in the season points battle.
Rounding out the MSR entries is the #6 Graydon Elliott Fusion Racing Lexus-Riley with Mike Borkowski and Paul Mears, Jr. behind the wheel. Borkowski teamed with Cort Wagner to place ninth at Long Beach and also earned a third earlier this season at Mexico City. He currently stands 13th in points.
Heading into the VIR 400, Lexus maintains a 13-point lead over Porsche in the Daytona Prototype Manufacturer’s Championship. With three victories in the season’s first four events, Lexus-powered entries have won 11 races and 18 pole positions in 30 Rolex Series events since entering the series in 2004.
This Sunday’s VIR 400k will be televised live by SPEED at 1 p.m. Saturday will feature a unique 30-minute “qualifying race” to set the starting positions for Sunday’s event. The qualifying race is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. (all times Eastern).

PRUETT, DIAZ PUT LEXUS IN LONG BEACH WINNER’S CIRCLE
After relinquishing the lead on the track on Lap 6, the Ganassi Racing crew took over and re-gained the lead with a quick pit stop and driver change under a full-course caution on Lap 12 and then Scott Pruett took it the rest of the way to give he and co-driver Luis Diaz a 3.989-second victory over rivals from Porsche and BMW in today’s Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series event at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach.
With their second victory of the season, Pruett and Diaz, who captured the pole position on Friday, moved into the series points lead with 111 points.
“It’s awesome to be in Victory Lane here in Long Beach,” said Pruett, who now has five Long Beach victories in four different classes to his credit. “A party at “the Beach” is always fun and always exciting. We had to drive as hard as we possibly could. The team did a great job in the pits and Lexus gave us a great motor with increased drive-ability.”
While the driving of Pruett and Diaz captured the headlines, it wasn’t the only stellar drive from a Lexus-powered team as Oswaldo Negri carved through the field from the 16th-spot on Lap 12 to earn a fifth-place finish for the #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley for Michael Shank Racing (MSR) along with co-driver Mark Patterson. As the race was winding down, Negri’s highlight reel performance included passing three cars for position on a single lap.
Cort Wagner and Mike Borkowski made it three Lexus-powered entries in the top-10 with a ninth-place finish in the #6 Graydon Elliott Fusion Racing Lexus Riley for MSR. After a 17th-place in qualifying, the duo moved up eight spots during the 52-lap event.
The victory is the third in four races this season for Ganassi Racing and Lexus after winning the Rolex 24 at Daytona and the Mexico City event to open up the 2006 campaign. Today’s triumph is the 11th for Lexus in 30 Rolex Series events since entering the series in 2004.
Lexus now takes a 12-point lead over Porsche in the Daytona Prototypes Manufacturer’s Championship after four rounds of the 14-round title chase.
The Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series returns to action at Virginia International Raceway, April 23.

“Quotes”
SCOTT PRUETT, #01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley: “It’s awesome to be in Victory Lane here in Long Beach, A party at “the Beach” is always fun and always exciting. This is the place to be. The 23 car kept us on our toes and it turned out to be a fast, qualifying-paced race.We had to drive as hard as we possibly could. The team did a great job in the pits and Lexus gave us a great motor with increased drive-ability.”
LUIS DIAZ, #01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley: “It feels like Scott and I are now even after this one. He helped me win in Mexico City and now I've helped him win in front of his family in California. It's still a long way to go in the championship, so we need to keep our heads down and continue to get the job done.”
OSWALDO NEGRI, #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley: “We have had a couple of tough races the last two races, so I wanted to be a little conservative and just make sure we got to the finish. So I’d study the cars ahead and just focus on where they were weak, so I was able to make some good clean passes and move up pretty well. In the last few laps, something sounded funny with the engine, so I just backed off and made sure we got to the finish. Fortunately, everything was fine and we finished without a problem and hopefully can pick up some momentum in the points.”
MARK PATTERSON, #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley: “Watching Oz (Negri) make up all that time to the guys in front each lap was really something else. The car was beautifully set up, and it just gave me the confidence to keep finding more time out there without having to do anything silly. I think if Oz had a few more laps, the guys ahead would have been in trouble, but its good to get another solid points finish under our belt, and we’ll be looking for more of the same at VIR.”
CORT WAGNER, #6 Graydon Elliott Fusion Racing with MSR Lexus-Riley: “The track got very slick right away, so the car was a bit of a handful. I was really busy out there, working to learn the track a bit still, and still trying to make up time to the leaders, so when the balance went off, things were a bit tricky. But, it was great to be racing on this track for the first time, and we stayed out of trouble to take a top ten at the end.”
MIKE BORKOWSKI, #6 Graydon Elliott Fusion Racing with MSR Lexus-Riley: “I was hoping to make up more positions there in the closing laps, but unfortunately, the braking in the car seemed to go away, and I just didn’t want to take any chances. So I struggled a bit with that, but we were able to avoid any kind of trouble, so we’ll take this top ten and just get ready for VIR.”

DIAZ EARNS LEXUS SECOND POLE OF ’06 GRAND AM CAMPAIGN
Previous time at the beach proved to be well-spent, as Luis Diaz (CompUSA Lexus-Riley) used the experience of four previous Long Beach events to help him register the quick time in qualifying to give Lexus its second pole position of the 2006 Grand American Rolex Sports Car season at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach Friday.
In earning Ganassi Racing’s second pole of the season, Diaz gave Lexus its 18th pole position in 30 Rolex Series events. The team also earned the top spot at Mexico City last month.
The pole position could be crucial in preparation for the shortest race in series history (90 minutes), as well as the first street-course race ever for the Daytona Prototypes.
“I think it helped that both Scott (co-driver Pruett) and I have run here in Long Beach in the past,” said Diaz. “It’s very important to qualify up front here because you need to stay out of the trouble that can happen in the first turn. It’s going to be a very tough race tomorrow and I think strategy will play a big role in the race. Everyone involved did a great job today.”
In addition to the pole from the Ganassi team, Michael Shank Racing (MSR) qualified two cars for Saturday’s first-ever Grand Am run in Long Beach. Mark Patterson qualified 15th in the #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley and he will team with Oswaldo Negri in Saturday’s race, while Cort Wagner placed the #6 Graydon Elliott Fusion Racing Lexus-Riley 17th. Wagner, who is making his first start with the MSR squad, will co-drive with Mike Borkowski.
This weekend’s Long Beach round will be televised by SPEED with same-day coverage. The event is scheduled to see the green flag fall at 7 p.m. with SPEED coverage beginning at 9 p.m. Saturday evening (all times Eastern).

LEXUS BRINGS 10-POINT MANUFACTURER’S LEAD OVER PORSCHE INTO TOYOTA GRAND PRIX OF LONG BEACH
With five top-three podium finishes in the first three races of the season, Lexus will bring a 10-point lead in the Daytona Prototypes Manufacturer’s Championship into this weekend’s Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach as the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series makes its debut performance on America’s premiere street circuit.
After wins in the first two races of the season at Daytona and Mexico City, Lexus earned a top-finish of third at Homestead and will focus on returning to victory circle at Long Beach this weekend.
Leading the way is Ganassi Racing, which has earned both Lexus triumphs this season. The team will run a one-car effort featuring 2004 series champion Scott Pruett and Mexican star Luis Diaz in the #01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley. The duo won in Mexico City and placed third in Miami. For Pruett, this weekend’s event marks the fourth different type of car he’s driven at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, having won in both Trans-Am and the Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race and registering a second in 1995 among his nine Long Beach Champ Car events. Pruett and Diaz enter this weekend’s event in third-place in the Driver’s Championship.
In addition to the Ganassi entry, Michael Shank Racing will field a pair of Lexus-powered Daytona Prototypes. After a difficult race at Homestead that saw each of the entries involved in multiple incidents on the tight infield road course, they will attempt to match or surpass their earlier season efforts that saw each team register a podium finish.
The #60 Flight Options Lexus-Riley earned a second-place finish at Daytona, but has struggled since. A fluke accident at Mexico City cost the team its chassis and has forced drivers Oswaldo Negri and Mark Patterson to play catch-up in the last two races with a new car. The #6 Graydon Elliott Fusion Racing Lexus-Riley was on the podium at Mexico City with a third-place finish, but drivers Mike Borkowski and Kenny Wilden saw any hopes of a second straight top finish dashed quickly at Homestead when the car was spun around early and lost a lap.
Heading into the weekend, Lexus maintains a 10-point lead over Porsche in the Daytona Prototypes Manufacturer’s Championship.
With a pair of victories to open the season, Lexus-powered entries have won 10 races and 17 pole positions in 29 Rolex Series events since entering the series in 2004.
This weekend’s Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach Grand-Am event will be televised by SPEED with same-day coverage. The 90-minute event is scheduled to see the green flag fall at 7:00 p.m. with SPEED showing the race at 9 p.m. Saturday evening. Friday’s qualifying is set for 6:55 p.m. (all times Eastern).
